Cognitive Assessments

Elevate Potential, Address Challenges: Comprehensive Assessments for Growth & Well-being.

Who Might Need an Cognitive assessment?

Cognitive assessments are also often referred to as intelligence tests or learning assessments. These tests are often recommended by paediatricians, schools or the NDIS.

Cognitive assessments may be recommended where the following is suspected to be present:

  • Intellectual Disorders
  • ADHD/Autism
  • Dyslexia/Dyscalculia/Dysgraphia
  • Assessing Giftedness
  • Language/Speech Delays
  • Non-Verbal or limited verbal abilities

Cognitive assessments may also be completed at the request of the NDIS for the purposes of application for early childhood intervention funding or at the time of an NDIS plan review.

Cognitive assessments can also be used to develop a profile of strengths and weaknesses, can inform individual learning plans for students or inform applications for special consideration.

What Are the Benefits?

Learning assessments can offer valuable insight into one’s learning preferences, strengths, challenges, along with practical strategies and therapeutic recommendations to help them manage daily life more effectively.

Our assessments aim to provide a clearer understanding of how someone thinks, and learns. This insight helps with getting the right support—whether it’s in the classroom, at work, or through therapy. It can lead to more effective strategies, accommodations, and treatment options tailored to their specific needs. Our assessments don’t focus on labelling, but rather aim to improve your the child’s relationship with themselves and focus on self-empowerment.

What do Cognitive Assessments test?

Cognitive assessments always include use of rigorous, evidence-based psychometric tests including but not limited too, the WISC, WAIS or WIAT to identity any difficulties in learning.

The WISC:

Tests for verbal understanding, memory and speed of processing and problem solving. The WISC provides a full scale IQ on completion.

The WAIS (Is similar to the WISC but designed for adults).

Designed to test memory (visual and auditory), speech and language abilities, fluid reasoning and comprehension.

The WIAT:

Is used to test specific skills related to academics and is often used to determine if dyslexia or dysgraphia is present and is often used to advocate for special consideration in school or universities as well as inform the creation of individual learning plans.

What is the referral process?

  1. Book an initial intake session (50 minutes).

The first step in our referral process is to book an initial intake session. This session gives our psychologists the opportunity to meet with you, gather developmental history, and, where appropriate, conduct preliminary screening to determine whether further assessments may be beneficial and which ones are most suitable. Proceeding with an assessment can be a investment, so we aim to ensure that you receive a meaningful and beneficial experience, along with clear and valuable outcomes.

Following the intake session, our psychologist will help you decide on which assessment package would be recommended and assessments sessions can then be booked.

Notes on Rebates:

If you already have been accepted for support under NDIS, NDIS may cover certain learning assessments if requested in the plan.

Assessment Structure

They usually involve a combination of interviews, questionaires or tasks designed to understand how the brain processes information. It’s not a test you pass or fail—it’s a way to learn more about a person’s strengths and challenges. Afterward, you’ll receive a detailed report and recommendations to support wellbeing and development.

Our psychologist Cat Bedford currently has availability to administer Autism, ADHD, cognitive and learning assessments for children and adults.
