EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapeutic approach designed to help people process distressing memories, reduce their emotional impact, and build healthier ways of coping. Originally developed to treat trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), EMDR is now widely used for a range of difficulties, including anxiety, phobias, grief, and negative self-beliefs.

During EMDR sessions, your therapist will guide you to recall aspects of troubling experiences while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as following movements with your eyes or alternating sounds. This process helps the brain reprocess stored memories so they no longer feel overwhelming or disruptive. Importantly, EMDR does not erase memories but allows you to approach them with less distress and greater resilience.

Many clients describe EMDR as empowering, as it enables them to move beyond the grip of past experiences and regain a sense of balance in their lives. At our clinic, EMDR is offered as part of a tailored treatment plan, in a safe, supportive environment by our clinical psychologist and director Matt Scerri.
